$10 million prize for 100mpg (42.5km/litre) automobile

The X-Prize Foundation, a non-profit organisation partnered with Google and Adobe Systems amongst others, is offering a $10 million prize to the first company that can design, build and commercialise a viable and efficient vehicle that can get 100 miles per gallon (mpg), or about 42.5km per litre. This venture even has the backing of Hummer-loving Governator Arnold Schwarzenegger!

The Progressive Automotive X Prize aims to help the world reduce its addiction to crude oil and is open to teams around the world. Sixty teams had already signed up by the end of March 2008, and will have to produce a viable specimen by mid 2009. Teams will then have to race their vehicles across various parts of the US in 2009 and 2010.

Keep up to date with this competition on the X-Prize Foundation website.
