BMW working on diesel X5 hybrid, set for launch in 2009

After launching its X6 SAV at international auto shows as the first vehicle from the group to offer full petrol-electric hybrid drive (as opposed to its mild hybrid Efficient Dynamics technology), BMW is now readying a diesel X5 hybrid.

The X5’s engine is a development of the 2 litre diesel engine found in most BMW ranges already, though for this application twin turbo chargers are added to boost power to 147kw and 400 Nm of torque. In addition, an electric motor to the tune of 15kW and 210 Nm is mounted within the vehicle’s ZF eight-speed transmission (another new development). This will power the X5 to 100km.h in about 9 seconds – similar to larger petrol powered versions – though keep consumption down to 6.5 litres/100km (as measured by the European Union). At the same time, it will emit 172 g of CO2/km.

The X5 won’t be able to run on electric power only – sort of against the performance of BMW to have it move on electricity alone. The electric motor kicks in under acceleration, thereby reducing the amount of fuel used to get the vehicle going to a point where cruising on carbon fuels alone is more economical. The electric motor is powered by lithium-ion battery cell located in the luggage compartment, which in turn is charged by the electric motor under braking. There is also the chance (currently still being researched) of fitting the roof with 1m2 solar panel to help this charging.

Relevance for South Africa: With BMW SA already considering bringing its mild hybrid Efficient Dynamics system to our shores, and with the X5 already on sale locally, there is little reason for them not to consider bringing the X5 hybrid here. However, limiting factors will include supply numbers, local fuel requirements, servicing expertise and general public demand. Will have to wait and see…
