Car ads during Carte Blanche’s Cool Earth

Those of you who watch Carte Blanche will be aware that for the past few weeks the show’s been featuring its Cool Earth content - a series of inserts that focus on the threat of climate change. Last night’s show was an hour-an-a-half special (thanks to the rugby at 21:00 taking precedence over the usual 20:00 movie - go bokke!), which featured a number of informative stories. I was particularly happy to see the “worm people” over at Full Cycle being featured on the show.

Considering then that the entire content of last night’s Carte Blanche was focused on the effects on anthropogenic climate change, the car adverts that were shown in the ad breaks were just a little bit inappropriate. I noticed three car-related ads. The first one caused me to caugh out loud - the first commercial after one of the Carte Blanche segments was Cell C’s Win a Hummer ad. Later there was an advert for Jaguar XKs and the final ad break featured the Chrysler 300C.

I’m just not sure about a 4×4 behemoth, a 4.2l sports car and a 6.1l super sedan, as being the cars you’d want to advertise during an environmental programme. One wonders if these automakers deliberately advertised  in these slots in an attempt o mitigate negative public sentiment caused by the Carte Blanche content. I’m also surprised that some of South Africa’s more frugal cars weren’t advertised during the show - it would have been a great opportunity to capitalise on the newfound green awareness that I’m sure the Cool Earth content has sparked in a fair number of South Africans.
