Carpools. Gogogo!
Next time you’re on your way to school or work, just take a look around you at all the other cars doing the same thing, and pay close attention to who’s inside. Chances are that most of the cars around you have only one occupant. Considering that a typical car is made for four people, it’s clearly an awful waste to have only one person on board. Sharing your car with one or more people is the simplest way to drastically reduce your greenhouse gas output on a day-to-day basis.
If everyone who currently drives to work alone gave a daily a lift to one other person, it would massively reduce the carbon output of South African motorists. It would also greatly reduce the rush hour congestion on our roads. Sharing with more than one other person is even better!
The problem usually comes down to organising your own car pool. Many people don’t know others who live and work in the same areas, and having to go a fair distance out of your way to pick someone up makes a carpool time consuming and difficult. But, have no fear! CarPoolWorld makes carpooling easy. All you have to do is sign up on their site, and then search for a car pool near you. If there isn’t an existing car pool, create one and wait for somebody to contact you.
Just remember to excercise some caution - you don’t want to carpool with a psycho. CarPoolWorld provides these tips:
- You do not have to disclose your actual home address, work address, or phone numbers, and you do not even have to disclose your permanent e-mail address to other users of carpoolworld.com.
- Your initial face-to-face contact with new people should be in a common, populated, public location.
- Record the driver’s license and car registration information of the other person’s car.
- If you are the driver, record the personal information of your riders.
- Maybe you can take a few pictures of your carpool partners and their cars. Give this information to your friends or family.
Happy carpooling!
