Electric vehicle infrastructure based on cell provider business model

A former top SAP executive, Shai Agassi, has just launched a very exciting startup company called Better Place, which is aiming to drastically altar the electric vehicle landscape in the near future.

The company has already raised $200 million to develop their plan of launching a viable recharging network to support the growth of the electric vehicle market. The most interesting aspect of their business model is that it will operate much like a mobile-phone service provider. Better Place aims to lease electric cars to consumers in packages that include monthly service fees. Just like your cellphone that you get for free (or heavily subsidised) when you sign up a contract with your cellular provider, in this model motorists will get a subsidised EV when they sign up to have Better Place as their “electric fuel” provider.

You can find the complete lauch presentation from yesterday’s event here. It’s well worth a watch.
