Gordon Murray’s new project: a green car?

In just over two weeks time, South African born Gordon Murray will officially unveil his new company, Gordon Murray Design Ltd. Although very little is known about the company at this time, there’s some evidence that it will be working on a family car project rather than a supercar a la Murray’s legendary McLaren F1.

In a recent interview with CAR Magazine, Murray said that he next project is a “personal transport thing. The vehicle is so radical that you’d have to let people try it in everyday use.”

The green advantages of Murray’s new car are unlikely to come from drivetrain development. Murray has stated that his interest lies in the packaging of vehicles. “Unquestionably, the biggest challenge facing the automotive industry today is the need to improve fuel economy and reduce carbon dioxide emissions and really the only way of tackling this issue is through major weight reduction,” he said.

Murray is one of the world’s most respected auto designers, having made a significant impact on Formula One and road-going sportscar design. His more famous projects include the Brabham BT46B “Fan Car,” the McLaren F1 and the McLaren Mercedes SLR (which Murray was unhappy with due to its high mass). Murray is currently the director of advanced concepts at Caparo Vehicle Products, creators of the Caparo T1 supercar.
