GreenCars’ response to Business Day article on Toyota Prius sales

In response to a Business Day front page article entitled “High-octane SA eschews green Prius” (16 May 2008), GreenCars’ Christie Viljoen submitted a letter to the editor (published on 20 May 2008) in response to claims that the Prius’ less-than-desirable sales were due to South Africans’ love for speed (i.e. high-octane fuel). A more correct analysis, he argues, would be that Toyota is largely responsible for achieving low sales volumes, and not a lack of green demand or education. See the full letter as published here.

Fifth, it’s not like the Prius is all that green to start with ;) It is only marginally more efficient than the very best modern hatchbacks and there are still some questions around its manufacturing process and recycling of components…

Good response - it’s not selling well because it’s really not such a good product, overall.

I think Toyota and other manufacturers deserve much more grilling over why there aren’t more mass-appeal “green” cars in SA. BMW Efficient Dynamics 1 Series anyone?
