More fun with the GREET model
Our earlier post comparing the Prius’ green credentials to a Hummer’s turned out to be something of a walkover. The Prius decimated both the H2 and H3, in terms of overall lifetime energy usage, but how does it fare against a more economical car? GreenCars has featured the Citroën C1 before, and at the time we wondered whether or not it might actually be more eco-friendly than a Prius. Let’s find out.
Using the GREET model’s assumptions, the energy usage figures for a Prius are as follows:
Manufacturing/recycling: 112.910 mmBTU
Driving (250 000km lifetime): 321.247 mmBTU
TOTAL: 434.158 mmBTU
Looking at the C1, it’s lighter than the Prius and it has similar fuel consumption, so it’s likely to perform even better in GREET-based calculations. Here are the stats:
Manufacturing/recycling: 82.258 mmBTU
Driving (250 000km lifetime): 344.811 mmBTU
TOTAL: 427.069 mmBTU
There you have it - over a 250 000km lifespan, a Citroën C1 is actually slightl less harmful to the environment than a Prius. It’s less than half the price too. Interesting.
