SA economy will benefit from biofuels
At the United Nations launch of the World Economic Situation and Prospects Report in Johannesburg, University of Pretoria Professor Jan van Heerden stated that the growing use of biofuels will have a positive effect on the South African economy, despite the negative impact that higher maize prices will have on the poor.
“Biofuels will have an impact on the agricultural market - it will help farmers who sell into this market,” he stated.
Van Heerden added that the timing was also right for farmers to consider products like ethanol as the price was high and it made business sense to go this route.

One issue that frequently comes up is the bad quality of SA diesel (and petrol for that matter) which prevents the manufacturers from bringing in the latest generation of clean burning engines. Perhaps a little competition from local biofuel manufacturesrs will push SASOL in the right direction.
