Smug Alert!

Last year’s South Park episode, Smug Alert, poked fun in a typically irreverent way at the self-righteous attitude of hybrid car drivers. You can see a clip below (the Toyonda Pious, and the Hindsight are the featured hybrids):

It’s now being claimed that the majority of hybrid owners cite the ability to show off their green credentials as being the main reason they purchased a hybrid. According to a study by CNW Market research, the hybrid “smug cloud” is on the rise. The number of Prius drivers who selected “Makes a statement about me” in early 2007 was 57 percent - a far higher percentage than those who cited higher fuel economy, lower emissions, styling or other factors such as tax incentives as reasons for purchasing a hybrid.

This is now the second time that CNW Marketing Research has released a study that casts aspersions on hybrids; the first CNW study to make headlines claimed that Hummers are actually more environmentally friendly than Priuses. AutoblogGreen looks at the shortcomings of that study here. One wonders what CMW’s agenda might be?

Still, I’d imagine that in the face of ever-increasing fuel costs, it must be quite hard not to be at least a little smug when you save so much at the pumps.
